Foundation Renovations
A basement renovation could indeed be very useful to the family. With or without basement, the house's foundation is very crucial to any kind of renovation. A foundation supports what is above it, and resists the soil's pressure beneath. Attending to any problems with the foundation prior to renovation is necessary, for neglecting it could cause accidents and need for more expensive repairs.
Ordinary problems related to foundation
Materials for the foundation could include unit masonry, poured concrete, wood, and stone. Every kind has its associated difficulties. For instance, ordinary problems pertaining to the soil or structure are cracks in the slabs, crumbling mortar, weak soils, uneven settlement, warped walls, frozen soil attached to the foundation, a low ceiling, radon infiltration, pest infestation, etc.
Foundation renovations and the professionals
Making carpentry work in the nursery room is one thing; turning foundation renovations into a DIY is another. For the former, the worst that could happen is that a nail in the crib, for example, is left halfway sticking out, and the baby might get a puncture wound from it. A house crumbling down during a slight earthquake is much worse. Thus, hiring pros -- that would mean an architect or an engineer -- to oversee the structural integrity of the foundation is a must.
Attending to the cracks
Cracks have to be fixed to bar soil, gas, or water ingress. The major cracks could permit big quantities of soil or water to leak or seep through. The active cracks - especially the horizontal ones - could be a precursor of later problems (or current problems with stability).
Animals and insects that affect the foundation
If the problem is termites, there is only one solution -- call the exterminator. Also take note that rodents and cockroaches are both possible health dangers to the family and could be the primary cause of the house's damage. To protect the foundation of the house, regular checking is a must.
